This trend started in the 1970s in Europe with manufacturers preferring to contract out logistics enabling them to concentrate on their core business - building aeroplanes.
If improvement in communications, especially the express transportation of freight, has allowed the concentration of stocking zones, particularly in the US, then the problem of verbal communications, cost of freight, added to the administrative difficulties of importation, certainly justifies local stocking of inventories in various countries outside the U.S.
